RBW EV Classic Cars has unveiled a new prototype which combines the iconic design of the MGB Roadster with a modern electric powertrain.
Underneath the brand-new body shell reside up to eight lithium-ion batteries, which are located where the petrol engine would normally sit. They send power to a rear-mounted electric motor that develops 94 hp (70 kW / 95 PS).
That’s a relatively modest output and the performance isn’t breathtaking, as the dash to 60 mph (96 km/h) takes nine seconds. The 80 mph (129 km/h) top speed isn’t very impressive either, but the car is more about cruising rather than all out performance.

With the standard six batteries, the EV Roadster has a range of 160 miles (257 km). That increases to 200 miles (322 km) with seven batteries, but the company didn’t give numbers for the eight-battery model.
When the batteries are depleted, they’ll need eight hours to recharge. However, extra batteries will likely extend that time.
Despite the old school styling, the EV Roadster has a bespoke double wishbone suspension and a new regenerative braking system. The company also added that all parts and components used on the vehicle are brand new.
Speaking of new, the cabin has leather seats, modern gauges and a multi-function digital display. There’s also a seven-inch Pioneer infotainment system with GPS navigation.
While the car is technically a prototype, the EV Roadster is set to go into production early next year. Only 30 units will be built and pricing starts at £90,000 ($116,370 / €98,959) before taxes.
RBW also said they’re working on a fixed top GT variant as well as a second electric recreation. Little is known about the latter, but the company has previously mentioned an electric Jaguar XKSS roadster.
