KIA’S European Factory Reached 4 Million-Production Milestone

Kia’s European manufacturing plant in Slovakia has marked an important milestone in the brand’s history after the facility produced its four millionth vehicle with a Kia Sportage rolling off the production line today.

Kia’s European base near Žilina, Slovakia, began mass production in 2006 and acted as the springboard for Kia’s expansion across Europe. The first vehicles to be produced at Kia Slovakia were members of the Kia Ceed family – a model line-up that continues to be designed, engineered and manufactured in Europe specifically to appeal to European customers. The Ceed range was introduced at the same time as Kia’s industry-leading seven-year warranty, and this winning combination catapulted Kia into the European mainstream.

Kia Slovakia produced its one-millionth vehicle in 2012 and every three years since has added another million vehicles to the manufacturing tally. Now, nine years later, four million cars have rolled off the 7.5-kilometre production line capable of simultaneously producing eight different models. It currently oversees the manufacture of all members of the Ceed family, comprised of Ceed, Ceed GT, Ceed Sportswagon, ProCeed, XCeed and the last three generations of the Sportage.

Suk-Bong Kim, President of Kia Slovakia, delivered a message of appreciation to the team: “It is due to the efforts of all our employees, especially the production operators, that we have achieved this incredible milestone in our history. Kia Slovakia has long been recognised for outstanding quality, efficiency, safety and technology, and the success of our models in Europe reflects these high standards.”

The plant is now one of Slovakia’s major producers and exporters employing a 3,700 strong workforce assisted by high-tech robots. A recent investment of €70 million allows the plant to produce and assemble new petrol engines in response to changing market demands. Kia will now build small-capacity, high-efficiency, hybrid-compatible petrol engines on three engine production lines, with the fourth dedicated to the brand’s latest ‘Smartstream’ 1.6-litre diesel engine.

Kia’s Žilina plant also oversees and facilitates the production of the Sportage model range, proving ever popular with the UK market. In the first half of 2021 alone, the Sportage has repeatedly retained its place as one of the top 10 best-selling vehicles on the road, and is regularly the UK’s bestselling Kia model, alongside the Niro family.

2021 MG Marvel R Electric SUV Doesn’t Look Like Something Captain America Would Drive

MG has a new electric SUV in its lineup. It’s named the Marvel R and targets the European market, where it will launch in May, with a tri-motor set-up, electric all-wheel drive and a competitive range.

The Marvel R has one motor on the front axle and two on the rear, for a combined output of 288 PS (284 HP / 212 kW) and 665 Nm (490 lb-ft). This allows it to accelerate to 50 and 100 km/h (31-62 mph) in 1.8 and 4.9 seconds respectively, and up to 200 km/h (124 mph), while its towing capacity is rated at 750 kg (1,653 lbs). A rear-wheel drive variant will join the AWD model.

MG’s new zero-emission SUV has a 400-km (250-mile) range on the WLTP cycle. The battery, whose capacity hasn’t been disclosed yet, can be charged at public stations with the 11 kW on-board 3-phase charger. It also supports DC fast-charging, taking 30 minutes to charge from 0 to 80 percent. The lithium-ion battery can also supply energy to an external device, such as an air pump, electric scooter, laptop or another EV, with the V2L (vehicle-to-load) system.

At 4,674 mm (184 in) long, 1,919 mm (75.6 in) wide and 1,618 mm (63.7 in) tall, it has a bigger overall footprint than the Hyundai Kona Electric, and a 2,800 mm (110.2 in) long wheelbase, or about as long as the second-gen Audi Q5. The rear trunk has a 357-liter (12.6 cu-ft) volume, which increases to 1,396 liters (49.3 cu-ft) with the rear seats folded down. Moreover, the frunk offers an additional 150 liters (5.3 cu-ft) of space.

The Marvel R looks nothing like the MG5 electric compact estate. It has a more discreet, closed-off, grille, C-shaped headlamps, slim taillights and light strips at both ends. The shoulder line is more pronounced and the roof is slightly arched towards the rear, while the lower parts of the body sport black protective plastic cladding.

The steering wheel seems identical to the MG5, and so do the door cards, but those are about the only things the two have in common inside. The center console holds a huge 19.4-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen for the infotainment system and HVAC controls, and the rotary gear selector is mounted below the display. Other highlights include the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting and leather upholstery.

More details about the Marvel R will be announced prior to its launch.

In addition to the special looks, the new Juke Enigma is the first Nissan to get the Amazon Alexa compatibility in Europe. With Alexa’s Nissan Skill enabled in the dedicated app and linked to the owner’s NissanConnect Services account, owners can remotely control certain functions of their crossover, such as checking the door-lock status, turning on the lights, seeing the remaining fuel range, finding out where it is parked or sending an address to the TomTom navi.

The Juke Enigma will officially launch in Europe this month. In the United Kingdom, it has a starting price of £23,195 ($31,622), which places it between the N-Connecta and the Tekna, which can be bought from £22,195 ($30,258) and £23,695 ($32,303) respectively. The Tekna+ range-topper is available from £25,095 ($34,212), while the entry-level Visia and mid-range Acenta set buyers back at least £18,595 ($25,350) and £20,195 ($27,532) respectively.
