Bigger trucks carry more weight including safety risks

Bigger trucks keep getting  bigger. The increased size also means increased dangers.

That’s the assessment of Consumer Reports. The publication’s analysts detailed that from 2000 to 2018 (the most recent study) trucks are 11 percent tall and 24 percent heavier.

As a result, big trucks have poorer front sight lines and bigger blindspots that can prevent viewing a small vehicle or a pedestrian.

Bigger Trucks doesn’t mean better trucks

“Because of their height and long hoods, some trucks have front blind spots 11 feet longer than some sedans and 7 feet longer than many popular SUVs, which increases the risk of the driver running over someone in front of them they can’t see,” said Keith Barry, Consumer Reports Auto Editor.

An analysis from the advocacy group KidsandCars.org found most fatalities in these kinds of crashes are children between 12 months and 23 months old.

According to Ford and GM representatives, trucks have increased in size because of consumer preferences. Bigger trucks require more girth and larger grilles to further assist engine cooling, particularly when the vehicles are towing trailers.

Consumer Reports believes mandatory advanced safety technology such as automatic emergency braking could help reduced increase problems. Reducing and designing safer roads for pedestrians and cyclists would also be beneficial.

The publication also reports a pickup truck’s tall front end and higher bumper are also more likely to cause serious injuries upon impact than the bumper of a lower vehicle.

GM Produces The Most American-Made Cars, Aren’t You Proud?

Feeling particularly patriotic today? Then you’ll appreciate reading about GM coming out on top in two separate independent studies as the carmaker with the most U.S.-made vehicle models.

According to Cars.com’s annual American-Made Index for 2020, nine of the top 25 models on the list were GM products, more than with any other carmaker.

The report looked over 91 models assembled in the U.S. for the 2020 model year, and even analyzed what percentage of parts were U.S.-made or Canadian-made, as well as country of origin for available engines, country of origin for available transmissions and U.S. manufacturing employees relative to the company’s footprint.

The second study was the American University Kogod School of Business ‘Made in America Auto Index’, where 10 GM models ranked in the top 25 – the most of any carmaker. This study also ranked GM highest among manufacturers for total domestic content across all 2020 models.

“We’re proud of GM’s massive American manufacturing footprint, consisting of 11 vehicle assembly plants, 26 stamping, propulsion, component and battery plants, and 19 parts distribution centers,” said Phil Kienle, GM VP of North American Manufacturing and Labor Relations. “Our manufacturing strength in the U.S. is a team effort starting with our employees and extending to our supplier partners and local communities across the country.”

These are the models that ranked in the top 25 for both surveys: Chevrolet Corvette (Bowling Green, Kentucky), Chevrolet Colorado (Wentzville, Missouri), GMC Canyon (Wentzville, Missouri), Chevrolet Camaro (Lansing, Michigan), Cadillac CT5 (Lansing, Michigan), Cadillac XT4 (Fairfax, Kansas), Cadillac XT5 (Spring Hill, Tennessee), Cadillac XT6 (Spring Hill, Tennessee), GMC Acadia (Spring Hill, Tennessee).

Since 2009, GM has invested over $27 billion in the U.S.

GMC Hummer EV Teased Again, Will Now Be Unveiled This Fall

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV was supposed to be unveiled on May 20th, but the coronavirus threw a wrench in those plans.

As a result, we’re being treated to an extended teaser campaign which is slowly revealing what we can expect when the model is finally unveiled this fall.

The latest video provides a glimpse at the truck’s development and it reveals an assortment of new details about the upcoming model. One of the things you’ll notice right away is the “Infinity Roof” with modular sky panels. They’ll be removable and will apparently come off in four separate sections.

The clip also shows the Hummer EV will be somewhat curvy and this stands in contrast to the slab-sided H2 and H3. Despite this, the truck will still have a rugged appearance as we can see pronounced fender flares and a beefy front bumper with D-rings.

Of course, the most revealing image shows the side of the pickup. As you can see, the model will have a short hood which meets an upright windscreen. There’s also a relatively flat roof, a rear spoiler and an angular C-pillar. Other notable features include a relatively short bed and stylish wheels wrapped in meaty off-road tires.

The clip goes on to list a number of features including adrenaline and crab modes. It also says the model will have an Ultium battery as well as “super fast” charging.

The company didn’t go into specifics, but GM has previously said the batteries will have capacities ranging from 50 to 200 kWh. The automaker has also confirmed their electric trucks will have 800-volt battery packs with a 350 kW fast-charging feature.

The video goes on to confirm the Hummer EV will be one of the 22 models getting the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system by 2023. It also mentions ultra-vision cameras and it’s possible the model will have some off-road camera tricks like a virtual spotter.

While a lot of questions remain, GMC has previously said the Hummer EV will have an electric powertrain that develops 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS) and 11,500 lb-ft (15,574 Nm) of torque. This will enable the pickup to rocket from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in just three seconds.

The Hummer EV will be built at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant and launched in the fall of 2021.
