Maserati MC20’s Acceleration Tested, Does It Live Up To The Hype?

Maserati has high expectations from the MC20, as it marks its return to the supercar arena.

In theory, it’s a very promising package. In practice, we have yet to find out whether it lives up to the hype, but we’re slowly getting there.

One of the first steps in this direction comes in the form of a short video posted by Motorsport Magazine, which after getting the chance to experience the mighty Ferrari 812 Competizione, got behind the wheel of the mid-engine Maserati at the track, demonstrating its 0 to (almost) 124 mph (0-200 km/h) performance.

According to the Italian automaker’s official figures, the MC20 needs less than 2.9 seconds from rest to 62 mph (0-100 km/h). Keep the throttle pegged to the floor, and you will eventually see over 202 mph (325 km/h) on the speedometer.

The MC20 is powered by a new twin turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that’s believed to have strong ties to Ferrari. However, neither brand has said anything about it so far, so you may want to take it with the proverbial pinch of salt, especially since it’s billed as a “100 percent Maserati”.

Whatever the case might be, what’s important is that it delivers 621 HP (630 PS / 463 kW) and 538 lb-ft (730 Nm) of torque. The engine, which features cutting-edge tech such as dual-injection system and pre-chamber combustion system with twin-spark plugs inspired by Formula 1, is connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with a limited-slip differential and rear-wheel drive. Sounds like a pretty good recipe, doesn’t it?

Hot on the heels of Maserati launching its Fuoriserie program a couple of months ago, designers from the Italian car manufacturer have released renderings of a rather unusual MC20.

This MC20 has been designed as a concept with a focus on snow-driving. To prepare the mid-engined supercar for such conditions, a handful of modifications appear to have been made.

Most notably, the car has been finished in a bright shade of orange that would help it stand out in the snow, as opposed to blending in with the initial shade of white used in the launch car. Additionally, Maserati’s designers have jacked up the ride height and fitted a set of winter tires with studs to ensure the rear-wheel drive car can actually put its power to the ground.

Rounding out the modifications is a roof rack that can hold a pair of skis. The interior has also been trimmed in white leather with a host of orange accents, including on the door panels, center console and the outer edges of the seats.

We doubt Maserati has any plans of offering snow-focused parts for the MC20 through its FuoriSerie customization program, but it will probably offer a selection of personalization options for its customers.

The MC20 is powered by a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 producing 621 hp and 538 lb-ft (730 Nm) of torque. This engine is coupled to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to the rear wheels.
