New Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 Priced From £155k In The UK, Nearly £16k More Than 751HP Taycan Turbo S

Two months ago, Mercedes unveiled the AMG EQS 53 at the Munich Motor Show as the first electric vehicle to wear the AMG badge. Now, the German automaker has released pricing for it, and it’s about what you’d expect for a range-topping high-performance EV sedan.

The EQS 53 will start at £154,995 (equal to around $208,000 at current exchange rates) in the UK, or 55% more than the base EQS 450’s starting price of £99,995. It’s also more expensive than the current flagship Porsche Taycan Turbo S that’s rated for 761PS / 751HP and kicks off from £139,280 (about $186,900).

For that money, you get a dual-motor AWD drivetrain producing 649 hp (658 PS / 484 kW) and 701 lb-ft (950 Nm) of instant electric torque. Upgrade to the AMG Performance Package with the Night Edition that pushes the starting price to £163,900 (around $220,000) though, and that same drivetrain produces 751 hp (761 PS / 560 kW) and 752 lb-ft (1020 Nm) of torque.

The former enables a 3.8-second sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) with a top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h), while the latter allows for 3.4 seconds to 62 mph with a top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h). The range is the same for both, with a WLTP-estimated 358 miles (576 km) on tap from the car’s 107.8 kWh battery.

Standard features on all variants include the 56-inch Hyperscreen, an AR heads-up display, Nappa leather upholstery, a Burmester® surround sound system, a Parking package with Active Parking Assist, and 360° camera, Driving Assistance Package Plus, AMG sound programs, AMG-specific bodywork, and an AMG steering wheel.

Included with the Night Edition are 21-inch AMG alloy wheels, a flat-bottomed sport steering wheel, and sport pedals. Upgrading to the £8,995 AMG Performance Package (which is only available with the Night Edition) gets you carbon-ceramic brakes, AMG Dynamic Plus boost for Race Start, the AMG Sound Experience, the AMG Driver’s Package with increased top speed, AMG TRACK PACE, and AMG carbon-fiber interior trim.

Finally, serving as a counterpart to the bold Night Edition is the more subtle Touring specification, which comes with 22-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels and elegant ambient lighting in the cabin. On top of that, you can opt for the £2,995 Rear Luxury Lounge package (only available with the Touring), which outfits the multi-contour rear seats with black Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery, power reclining, luxury headrests, neck and shoulder heating, comfort armrests, separate climate controls, an MBUX tablet, wireless charging, and additional USB ports.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is currently on sale now, with the first UK deliveries expected to arrive in April 2022.

Mercedes To Honor Stirling Moss At Goodwood Revival With Two Of His Most Famous Race Cars

Mercedes-Benz Classic is planning on taking two of Sir Stirling Moss’s most important race cars to the 2021 Goodwood Revival in honor of the driver who passed away at the age of 90 in April 2020.

One of Mercedes’ all-time great drivers, the Briton is credited as one of the best Formula 1 drivers ever to miss out on a driver’s title and drove alongside the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio.

Indeed, to celebrate his stunning performances alongside perhaps the postwar era’s most accomplished driver, Mercedes is taking the 1955 W 196 R with which Moss finished second in that year’s Formula championship.

Powered by a 2.5-liter straight-eight with desmodromic valves and direct fuel injection, it was a technological marvel. Capable of delivering up to 285 hp (290 PS/213 kW), it earned Moss victory at the German Grand Prix in 1955, while Fangio took it to victory in Argentina, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy.

The second car Mercedes is taking to Goodwood might be the Briton’s most famous. The 1955 300 SLR (W 196 S) was a version of the same Grand Prix adapted for events like the Mille Miglia.

Racing alongside his navigator, Denis Jenkinson, under the now-famous number 722, the pair managed an average speed of 157.65 km/h (97.8 mph) over the 1,600 km (1,000 miles) course. Like the Grand Prix car, it featured a straight-eight engine, though it was bored to nearly three liters, and was thus capable of making 305 hp (310 PS/228 kW).

“In honor of the great person and racing driver Sir Stirling Moss, Mercedes-Benz Classic has already presented the ‘722’ ‘at several events in England over the past few months,” says Christian Boucke, Head of Mercedes-Benz Classic. “The highlight and at the same time the conclusion of this special tour is certainly the Goodwood Revival. There, in addition to the racing sports car, we are showing an original Formula 1 racing car from 1955.“

The Goodwood Revival will be running from September 17 to September 19.

Is This Funky E-Class Actually A Next-Gen Test Mule In Highly Effective Camouflage?

Mercedes appears to be testing the next-generation E-Class with a lightly modified test mule high in the German mountains.

The photos, sent to us by our trusty spy photographers, show a dark red E-Class with plastic fender flares, unusual sensors, and a “Brake-Test” sticker on the back. The whole look actually looks rugged and fun but implies that Mercedes is already in the process of getting the W214 E-Class ready for production.

If those fender flares and the seemingly extended track-width are anything to go on, that would suggest that the next E-Class is going to go wider than the current model. Speaking of the current model, although it fits in with Mercedes’ current design language, it’s actually still a generation behind the C-Class and the S-Class.

The update that Mercedes gave the E-Class in March 2020 didn’t herald a new generation. Instead, it was just a facelift that introduced new design elements, the latest MBUX infotainment technology, fresh safety tech, and a pair of new inline-six-cylinder engines. The gas versions make between 156-367 PS (154-362 HP/115-270 kW) and the diesel versions from 160-330 PS (158-326 HP/118-243 kW).

The current, fifth-generation W213 E-Class, though, launched in 2016 and is therefore getting a little long in the tooth by Germany’s premium sedan standards. A new generation is therefore expected before too long. Whether Mercedes will include the level of electrification that defines the new C-Class remains to be seen, but odds are good.

The AMG version of the E-Class is likely to make use of an electric motor to supplement its engine, too. A trademark application for “E73” may suggest a big hybrid to stand out above the rest of the lineup.

Although we’re still a little far out to know when Mercedes plans on revealing the new E-Class, the recent facelift and this mule would make a 2023 or 2024 debut sensible.

Lewis Hamilton Is A Big Fan Of The Mercedes-AMG Project One

<!––>

<!––>

It seems like an age since the Mercedes-AMG Project One was first unveiled in September 2017 and while development of the F1-powered hypercar has encountered a few delays in recent years, customer deliveries will begin later this year.

Before that happens, however, seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton recently had the chance to check it out up close and in person. While it is unclear how involved Hamilton has been in the development of the car, he certainly seems impressed with what his employer has created.

One interesting thing about this video is that Hamilton refers to the car as the ‘Project One’, as does the official Mercedes-AMG Facebook page. When the concept was initially unveiled, it was indeed dubbed the ‘Project One’ but the German automaker soon dropped the ‘Project’ from its name, simply referring to it as the ‘One.’ It remains unclear what the production model will be called.

Regardless of its name, we have an excellent idea of the performance the hybrid hypercar will provide. Thanks to a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine from a Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 car, as well as four electric motors, the hypercar churns out over 1,000 hp and will hit more than 217 mph (350 km/h). More impressive will be the vehicle’s acceleration thanks to its immense power, torque, and all-wheel drive system.

Unsurprisingly, Mercedes has had to extensively modify the V6 for street use, including reducing its redline to 11,000 rpm. Nonetheless, the AMG Project One is shaping up to be the nearest thing to a Formula 1 car for the road.

YouTuber Crashes Mercedes G63 AMG Through Fence Trying To Do Donuts

YouTube channel DailyDrivenExotics (DDE) has done it again with another headline-grabbing car accident, this time in a Mercedes G-Class. In a video featuring a series of off- and on-road shenanigans, the bunch managed to crash the G-Wagen straight through a fence, nearly rolling it over.

The video begins with DDE going through their showroom, which includes their newly-completed, custom windshield-less Lamborghini Huracan, among many other unique vehicles.

They then proceed to take said Huracan out and do donuts in the parking lot, until they have the idea to do the same with the G63 in the dirt lot next to it.

Despite the fact that it is supposed to be going up for sale soon, they take the G-Wagen onto the dirt lot and begin playing around. They kick up some mud and dirt, and slide around a bit, all accompanied by the G63’s V8 growl. However, after a few minutes of fun, they send the off-roader directly into a metal fence after rolling it over an embankment near the edge of the lot.

We’ve seen lots of Youtubers doing silly things just to garner views, but we guess crashing a G63, and nearly rolling over, most likely doesn’t fit in that category. In spite of the damage done to SUV, as they make their way over to it, they are laughing and smiling as if they didn’t just crash a range-topping Mercedes G-Class.

Unfortunately for them, the damage was fairly substantial. The crash resulted in scratches all over the roof and hood, and half of a metal pole drove its way through the front bumper, with the other half wedging itself in the frame and needing to be cut out. It should be repairable, but we’re not too sure if the next owner of this car would be happy to hear that a metal rod had previously impaled the front end of his new G-Wagen.

You can watch the whole video, crash included, for yourself below.

Mercedes Caught Benchmarking EQS Against A Porsche Taycan

Perhaps the least surprising news of the day is Mercedes using a high-performance electric car as a benchmark against the upcoming EQS, the EV sibling of the new S-Class.

Our spies caught a fully camouflaged Mercedes EQS roaming the streets near Stuttgart with a Porsche Taycan alongside it.

The upcoming EQS is set to get a unique bodywork compared to the S-Class, featuring a five-door fastback bodystyle with an extended roofline, a shape previewed by the 2019 EQS Vision Concept.

Read More: 2022 Mercedes EQS Debut Getting Closer As Electric Flagship Starts Nürburgring Testing

Mercedes has confirmed that they are targeting a maximum driving range of 435 miles (700 km) on the WLTP cycle with the EQS, which will be based on Daimler’s new EV-specific architecture. We also know that it will be manufactured at the company’s Factory 56 in Sindelfingen, Germany, starting next summer ahead of its market launch in the second half of 2021.

Details on the powertrains remain unconfirmed at this point, with the 2022 Mercedes EQS expected to feature dual motors and all-wheel-drive, at least in its more expensive variants. The entry-level model is expected to offer around 400 HP and the rumored AMG version is said to offer more than 600 HP.

Previous spy shots have revealed that the interior will adopt a very similar dashboard with the new S-Class, meaning a minimal design and a pair of crisp displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, as well as very few actual buttons – something that is quickly becoming the norm.

While an actual comparison between the Mercedes EQS and Porsche Taycan is right now out of the question, seeing the two together helps us understand better where the electric Mercedes is going to sit in the market; the Porsche looks much lower and wider in comparison, with the Mercedes appearing to be significantly longer as well. This is to be expected, since Mercedes is gunning for the more luxurious corner of the market while the the Taycan has a much sportier character.

The Mercedes EQS will be the brand’s flagship electric model and is set to rival models like the EV version of the next BMW 7-Series, the next-gen Jaguar XJ EV, the Tesla Model S, the upcoming Audi E-Tron GT, and, of course the Porsche Taycan.

Daimler Believes New W223 Mercedes S-Class Can At Least Match Predecessor In Terms Of Sales

Daimler thinks that the all-new W223 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will eventually boost overall sales while matching or even increasing the profit level brought in by the current generation model.

According to company CEO Ola Kallenius, the size of the luxury segment is being fueled by a surge in global wealth, which is good for large sedans like the S-Class, despite the market leaning heavily towards SUVs, crossovers and EVs.

“The increase in wealth works in our favor,” said Kallenius. “If you look at its prospects, this new generation can match the 222 and even grow over the entire life cycle.”

Mercedes has sold over 500,000 units of the current W222 model, since its introduction back in 2013. This includes the Mercedes-Maybach variant, a derivative that happens to be particularly popular in the world’s largest market, China.

Kallenius also stated that annual sales for the W222 S-Class peaked at just over 100,000 units, a level he believes the W223 should match. He said that a 25% improvement in manufacturing efficiency (due to improved outsourcing logistics) should ensure that S-Class margins don’t get diluted, reports Autonews Europe.

“We naturally have the goal of achieving a return at least as high as we have with the previous one,” added the Daimler boss. “It’s an important pillar of our profitability.”

Meanwhile, Kallenius declined to comment on the future of the S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet variants, although Daimler execs have indicated in the past that no successors are currently in the pipeline.

Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe Gets 582 HP And Classic-Looking Wheels From Lorinser

Presented last year ahead of the New York Auto Show premiere, the facelifted Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe has been tuned by Lorinser, who revised its looks and increased its power as well.

We will start with the latter part, which is also the most impressive, as the power module unleashes 582 HP (591 PS / 434 kW) and 609 lb-ft (826 Nm) of torque. Priced at €2,499 ($2,859) in Germany, it can also be fitted to the regular AMG GLC 63 and 63 S.

The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which powers the entire AMG GLC 63 range, pumps out 503 HP (510 PS / 375 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) in the S variant of the premium compact crossover. So, while the tuner did not disclose performance numbers, we’re likely looking at noticeable gains compared to the stock GLC 63 S Coupe, which does the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.8 seconds and has a 174 mph (280 km/h) top speed.

Evoking the spirit of the Mercedes W140, W124 and 190, the LM2R alloy wheels, which were introduced earlier this year, are available for the SUV and Coupe versions of the GLC. On the car pictured here, they measure 9×21 inches at the front and 10.5×21 inches at the rear and can be ordered in hypersilver or black, with a starting price of €2,900 ($3,312) per set. Customers can further change the looks of their rides by going for the carbon side mirror caps, which will set them back another €799 ($914).
