2022 Toyota Avalon Drops AWD And TRD, Starts From $36,375 For Its Final Year

The fifth-generation Avalon might have been introduced in 2018, but Toyota has confirmed that 2022 will mark the end of its production. Today, the automaker announced pricing for the 2022 MY alongside a few changes in the lineup.

The 2022 Toyota Avalon starts from $36,375 (excluding the $1,025 fee), making it $250 more expensive than last year’s model.

The full-size sedan is not available in AWD variants anymore, while the sporty TRD trim was also dropped from the range. The good news for prospective buyers is the addition of new safety features as standard, including the upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ package (dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, etc), and the addition of a rear-seat reminder system.

The hybrid combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors producing a combined 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and comes with a fuel economy rating of 44 mpg combined.

The 2022 lineup includes six trim levels, including the XSE Nightshade Edition that is visually differentiated from the glossy black accents, the 19-inch wheels, and the rear diffuser. Inside, variants are differentiated with the base XLE featuring SofTex upholstery and “engineered wood” trim, the Limited coming with perforated leather and genuine wood sourced from Yamaha, and the Touring with perforated SofTex / Ultrasuede and aluminum trim.

Mazda3 And CX-30 Get Mild Updates In Japan Including New Special Editions

After the Mazda CX-3 Super Edgy, the automaker announced a series of special trim levels of the Mazda3 and the CX-30 in Japan, alongside small updates on the e-SkyActiv X motor.

Those include tweaking the intake port and exhaust silencer of the gasoline engine to produce a richer sound for spicing up the driving experience during acceleration. Additionally, engineers have updated the gas pedal feel for a greater “sense of unity with the car”. As a refresher, the e-SkyActiv X is a mild-hybrid 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 183 hp (137 kW / 186 PS) and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque.

In terms of the new trim levels, the Smart Edition is available for models equipped with the e-Skyactiv X engine. It brings more comfort and safety equipment including an active driving display, smart brake support, high beam control system, lane keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

Meanwhile the Black Tone Edition, which is available for all powertrain variants of both models, is visually differentiated by the black 18-inch aluminum wheels, the gloss-black mirrors, and the red stitching inside the cabin.

Following the example of the more recent CX-30, all Mazda3 models get a new dimming turn signal which, according to Mazda, gives “a sense of life” in the car. Last but not least, the Platinum Quartz Metallic is a new color option for the Mazda3 and the CX-30, while the Polymetal Gray Metallic is added to the palette of the Mazda3 Sedan.

Orders for the mildly updated Mazda3 and CX-30 are open in Japan as of today, with vehicles arriving in dealerships in late November.

Just after the premiere of the updated GT-R for Japan, Nissan US also announced the GT-R T-spec edition for North America, which slots above the GT-R Premium grade and will be available in Millennium Jade and Midnight Purple. The Millennium Jade was previously offered on the limited edition R34 GT-R V-Spec II Nür, but this is the first time it is available in the US market. Radford Unveils Type 62-2 John Player Special With 600 HP And Carbon Ceramic Brakes

The most extreme version of the Radford Type 62-2 has just been unveiled and it sports one of Lotus’ and Formula 1’s most iconic liveries. Unfortunately, the John Player Special (JPS) edition will be limited to just 12 examples.

“The John Player Special Type 62-2 is the most extreme Type 62-2 that money can buy,” said former F1 champion Jenson Button, co-owner of Radford. “It is low, sleek, and powerful and sports one of the most iconic racing liveries ever created—one of the liveries that the heroes of Formula 1 such as Emerson Fittipaldi and Ayrton Senna used to race with, in the cars that made me want to be a driver.”

Similar to the Gold Leaf Edition, the JPS Type 62-2 is an ultra-exclusive coachbuilt reimagination of the classic Lotus Type 62. Based on a new Lotus-sourced aluminum chassis, the JPS edition is powered by a 600 hp (608 PS/447 kW) 3.5-liter supercharged V6 engine, the most powerful offered by Radford.

Read More: Radford Type 62-2 Is A Gorgeous Modern Take To A 60s Lotus With Up To 600 HP

To cope with the extra horses, the JPS Type 62-2 gets AP Monobloc brake calipers with 360 mm fully carbon-ceramic rotors. These are surrounded by Dymag carbon composite wheels that measure 18-inches at the front and 19-inches at the rear. Chosen for their lightness, they help reduce unsprung mass, which, along with the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, improves handling.

The bodywork, too, is more extreme on the JPS model than other versions. The splitter is more pronounced than in the Type 62-2 Classic or Gold Leaf. Larger intakes and a diffuser that extends farther back also give the new model a more extreme appearance.

“The JPS Type 62-2 is even more dynamically focused and extremely capable on both road and track – it’s very light, very fast and nimble – a proper assault on the senses that will hold its own among even the most accomplished track cars,” said Button. “Naturally, it is also embellished with all of the high-end touches of a bespoke coachbuilder such as Radford.”

The John Player Special Type 62-2 will make its public debut next week at the Goodwood Revival. Production is expected to start before the end of 2021 and the first deliveries are expected in 2022. Radford says it is now accepting applications for build slots.

This Is The Interior Of The Upcoming Ineos Grenadier Off-Roader

The first interior photos of the Ineos Grenadier have been released before production of the off-roader starts in mid-2022.

The Grenadier is the brainchild of billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the owner of chemicals giant Ineos. It has been in development for a number of years now and for the first time, we get to see what the interior looks like.

Much of the cabin is clad in durable, stain-resistant materials that means it can be hosed out, while there are drain holes on the floor. Dominating the cabin is a prominent center console with large buttons and dials for things like the climate control, seat heating, window heating, and audio system. In addition, the Grenadier features a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, an analog clock, and a plethora of additional switches on the roof. It looks rugged but with a splash of modern technology.

One component of the Grenadier that really stands out is the BMW-sourced gear selector. This is because the Grenadier will be offered with BMW-sourced six-cylinder petrol and diesel powertrains that are paired to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission also sourced from current BMW models. Positioned next to this gear selector is a manual lever for the low-range transfer case.

“When we started thinking about the Grenadier’s interior, we looked carefully at modern aircraft, boats and even tractors for inspiration, where switches are (located) for optimal function, regular controls are close to hand, auxiliary ones are further away,” Ineos Grenadier head of design Toby Ecuyer said in a statement. “You can see the same approach in the Grenadier: the layout is functional and logical, designed with ease of use in mind. It has everything you need and nothing you don’t.”

2023 Cadillac Lyriq Electric SUV Unveiled In Production Form, Arrives Next Year For Under $60k

Cadillac is transitioning to an electric-only brand and that process is underway as the company has unveiled the 2023 Lyriq.

Previewed by last year’s thinly-veiled concept, the production model is the “culmination of a century of innovation and the beginning of a great new era.”

Cadillac stayed true to the Lyriq Concept

As you can see, the 2023 Lyriq closely echoes the concept as it features a black crystal grille with an illuminated emblem as well as lights that activate in choreographed sequences. The model also has “slim-line” LED headlights and a lightly revised front bumper.

[embedded content]

Moving further back, we can see flush-mounted door handles and conventional side mirrors. While the latter is a change from the concept, the production model retains distinctive taillights which wraparound the side of the vehicle and continue up the rear pillar. The model also comes standard with 20-inch wheels, but 22-inchers will be optional.

The Lyriq measures 196.7 inches (4996 mm) long, 77.8 inches (1977 mm) wide and 63.9 inches (1623 mm) tall with a wheelbase that spans 121.8 inches (3094 mm). This means it’s 1.8 inches (46 mm) shorter than the XT6, but offers a 9.1 inch (231 mm) longer wheelbase.

There’s a 33-inch digital screen inside

Cadillac interiors have left something to be desired, but the 2021 Escalade showed what the company was capable of. The Lyriq builds on that by featuring a cabin worthy of the wreathless crest.

Drivers sit behind an all-new steering wheel and find themselves looking at a freestanding display which spans 33-inches (838 mm). Unlike in the Escalade, this display appears continuous and Cadillac noted it can show over one billion colors.

Elsewhere, we can see a floating center console and slender air vents. The model also has laser etched wood and metal trim as well as a 19-speaker AKG Studio system. Cadillac also said drivers will find digital key technology and a next-generation active noise cancellation system.

Besides featuring an upscale design, the cabin is spacious as there’s 39.6 inches (1006 mm) of rear seat legroom. The model also has a cargo capacity of 28 cubic feet (793 liters), but that can be expanded to 60.8 cubic feet (1723 liters) by folding the rear seats down.

The spec sheet includes a 340hp electric motor, over 300 miles range

At launch, the Lyriq will feature a 100 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a rear-mounted electric motor that produces an estimated 340 hp (254 kW / 345 PS) and 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque. Cadillac didn’t say how fast the crossover will be, but noted it should be able to travel more than 300 miles (483 km) on a single charge.

When it comes time to recharge, owners will be thankful for the Lyriq’s 190 kW DC fast charging capability. It enables the crossover to get up to 76 miles (122 km) of range in 10 minutes and up to 195 miles (314 km) in 30 minutes.

However, most charging is done at home and this is where a 19.2 kW charging module shines as it can deliver up to 52 miles (84 km) of range per hour. Owners can also use a 11.5 kW charger and this delivers approximately 31 miles (50 km) of range per hour. With a 120V outlet, that drops to 3.5 miles (5.6 km) per hour.

RWD only for now, but AWD versions will follow

While the Lyriq will be rear-wheel drive only at launch, Cadillac officials confirmed additional variants are on the horizon. They didn’t go into specifics, but said we can expect all-wheel drive and all-wheel drive performance models in the future.

Speaking of performance, the Lyriq will offer one-pedal driving as well as variable Regen on Demand technology. The latter allows drivers to use a pressure-sensitive paddle on the steering wheel to control how quickly the vehicle slows down or comes to a stop. The model will also be offered with the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, which allows for hands-free operation on more than 200,000 miles (321,869 km) of roadway in the United States and Canada.

Prices starting from $59,990, deliveries from next year

Cadillac will begin accepting reservations in September and pricing will begin at $59,990. The Lyriq will be built in Spring Hill, Tennessee and deliveries are slated to begin in the first half of 2022.

It will be followed by an assortment of other electric vehicles as Cadillac is set to phase out internal combustion engines by 2030. While a number of people will be sad to see them go, Cadillac’s next EV will be the Celestiq and it’s certainly something to look forward too.

2021 MG Marvel R Electric SUV Doesn’t Look Like Something Captain America Would Drive

MG has a new electric SUV in its lineup. It’s named the Marvel R and targets the European market, where it will launch in May, with a tri-motor set-up, electric all-wheel drive and a competitive range.

The Marvel R has one motor on the front axle and two on the rear, for a combined output of 288 PS (284 HP / 212 kW) and 665 Nm (490 lb-ft). This allows it to accelerate to 50 and 100 km/h (31-62 mph) in 1.8 and 4.9 seconds respectively, and up to 200 km/h (124 mph), while its towing capacity is rated at 750 kg (1,653 lbs). A rear-wheel drive variant will join the AWD model.

MG’s new zero-emission SUV has a 400-km (250-mile) range on the WLTP cycle. The battery, whose capacity hasn’t been disclosed yet, can be charged at public stations with the 11 kW on-board 3-phase charger. It also supports DC fast-charging, taking 30 minutes to charge from 0 to 80 percent. The lithium-ion battery can also supply energy to an external device, such as an air pump, electric scooter, laptop or another EV, with the V2L (vehicle-to-load) system.

At 4,674 mm (184 in) long, 1,919 mm (75.6 in) wide and 1,618 mm (63.7 in) tall, it has a bigger overall footprint than the Hyundai Kona Electric, and a 2,800 mm (110.2 in) long wheelbase, or about as long as the second-gen Audi Q5. The rear trunk has a 357-liter (12.6 cu-ft) volume, which increases to 1,396 liters (49.3 cu-ft) with the rear seats folded down. Moreover, the frunk offers an additional 150 liters (5.3 cu-ft) of space.

The Marvel R looks nothing like the MG5 electric compact estate. It has a more discreet, closed-off, grille, C-shaped headlamps, slim taillights and light strips at both ends. The shoulder line is more pronounced and the roof is slightly arched towards the rear, while the lower parts of the body sport black protective plastic cladding.

The steering wheel seems identical to the MG5, and so do the door cards, but those are about the only things the two have in common inside. The center console holds a huge 19.4-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen for the infotainment system and HVAC controls, and the rotary gear selector is mounted below the display. Other highlights include the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting and leather upholstery.

More details about the Marvel R will be announced prior to its launch.

2021 Skoda Fabia Gets Larger Footprint, Petrol-Only Powertrains And Clever Features

Skoda invited a handful of journalists to Austria to experience the new generation Fabia first-hand prior to its unveiling this spring.

The prototypes used in this hands-on experience wore reptile-inspired camo with an abstract pattern created by designer Daniel Petr, which does a good job at keeping the most important visual aspects hidden.

Exterior styling and dimensions

Still, we can see that the grille is a bit bigger and is flanked by slender headlamps with integrated LED DRLs. The lower air intake features active slats, like on the bigger Octavia. The new taillights, which partially protrude into the tailgate, look different than the ones used on the Scala compact hatchback, and the reflectors now sit further up. Completing the exterior makeover will be the new wheel designs.

“The basis of the idea was that we imagined the car being revealed gradually, like a snake shedding its skin”, Petr said. “It’s going to be a very good-looking compact car with a clean and modern design that will raise the Fabia to the next level.”

Built on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB A0 platform, shared with its Volkswagen Polo and Seat Ibiza “cousins”, Skoda’s all-new subcompact hatchback, which will be followed by the estate version probably next year, has a bigger overall footprint. It is 4,107 mm (161.7 in) long and 1,780 mm (70.1 in) wide, 110 and 48 mm (4.3-1.9 in) longer and wider than its predecessor, and the wheelbase has grown by 94 mm (3.7 in) to 2,564 mm (100.1 in) – identical to the Ibiza and 16 mm (0.6 in) longer than the Polo.

At 380 liters (13.4 cu-ft), the boot volume is also bigger, and despite these changes, the weight has only slightly gone up, Skoda notes, adding that the car has the smallest drag coefficient (0.28) in the subcompact segment.

The cockpit

The new interior has yet to be revealed, yet those who drove it said that it features a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 6.8-inch standard touchscreen infotainment system that’s upgradable to 9.2 inches. Up to nine airbags, most of them offered from the base variant, are also included, and all passenger seats feature ISOFIX fittings and tether anchors for child seats.

The parking card holder and ice-scraper in the fuel tank cap are still present, and the new Fabia also has a USB-C connector in the rearview mirror to power dashboard cameras, and 12 (out of 43) ‘Simply Clever’ solutions, including a pouch beneath the luggage compartment shelf that supports up to 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs).

Another novelty is the introduction of the Travel Assist package, which brings automated driving functions to the 2021 Fabia by using the data obtained from the camera in the rearview mirror with the Predictive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Emergency Assist and Predictive Cruise Control. Moreover, the new Fabia will also have an automated parking function.

Three engine options – and no diesel in sight

The fourth generation Fabia will be offered with a choice of three engines, with a 1.0-liter naturally aspirated three-cylinder making 65 PS (64 HP / 48 kW) and 80 PS (79 HP / 59 kW) coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox used in the base models.

A turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder TSI, with 95 PS (94 HP / 70 kW) and 110 PS (109 HP / 81 kW) respectively, will be available for the mid-range grades, with the former paired to a five-speed manual and the latter coming with a standard six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed DSG transmission.

The most powerful 2021 Fabia will pack a 150 PS (147 HP / 110 kW) 1.5-liter TSI mated to a seven-speed DSG.

Gordon Murray’s Wild T.50s ‘Niki Lauda’ Offers 725 HP Of Track Driving Bliss For $4.3M

Gordon Murray Automotive has revealed the T.50s ‘Niki Lauda’, an extreme, limited run, track-only variant of the T.50 hypercar, which is designed to offer an uncompromising experience.

The even more hardcore variant of the T.50, which is named after the legendary three-time F1 champion and is unveiled on his birthday, has been in development in parallel with its road-going sibling and will be built in just 25 examples, once production of the 100 road-going T.50 models is completed in January 2023.

Read Also: Here Are Five Reasons Why The Gordon Murray T.50 Is So Special

[embedded content]

More powerful V12 spins up to 12,100 rpm

The new GMA T.50s weighs just 1,878 lbs (852 kg), down from the T.50’s  2,174 lbs (986 kg), which is combined with a more powerful version of the naturally aspirated 3.9-liter V12 engine that now produces 725 HP ( up from 654 HP) and can rev up to a stratospheric 12,100 rpm.

This beast of an engine is fed through a roof-mounted RAM induction box and comes with a bespoke straight-through exhaust system with thinner Inconel walls, features completely revised cylinder heads and camshafts, and is now bolted to a newly designed X-Trac six-speed paddle-shift transmission.

“In my view, it doesn’t get better than that and is driving in its purest form,” said Gordon Murray. “The T.50s Niki Lauda will give a visceral connection between driver, car, and track, the like of which has not been experienced to date.”

“I can just imagine going round your favorite circuit, sitting in the middle with that unsilenced V12 screaming just behind you – the driving experience will be something special. With a power to weight ratio better than that of a naturally aspirated LMP1 car, it is also going to be searingly quick and, with such a low weight, will change direction like an F1 car,” Murray added.

All exterior panels are unique to the track-only T.50s  and are made out of ultra-lightweight carbon-fiber, while the glass uses lighter glazing from the road-going version. The springs, dampers, and anti-roll bar are upgraded for the ultimate track performance, while the ride height is lowered to 87mm at the front and 116mm at the rear.

New active aero produces up to 1,500 kg of downforce

As we have already seen, the 400mm fan of the road-going model is retained but is now combined with an even larger rear diffuser and a new ‘delta wing’. The front end comes with barge boards designed to improve airflow to the side air intakes, while there are also new dive planes and a more prominent front splitter. Gordon Murray Automotive claims that the new T.50s is capable of producing up to 1,500 kg (3,306 lbs) of downforce.

The cabin of the new GMA T.50s ‘Niki Lauda’ still features the glorious central driving position, with the driver sitting on a full racing carbon-fiber bucket. The new T.50s is a two-seater, retaining a fixed passenger seat to the left of the driver. In place of the seat to the right, there’s a fire-extinguisher system while the right footwell is now occupied by a vertical switchgear panel.

Each one of the 25 owners of the new GMA T.50s Niki Lauda will receive a bespoke and personalized service. In addition, every example of the wild T.50s will be accompanied by the Trackspeed Package, which includes both engineering support and all the equipment needed to run the car at a track, including a full set of pit tools and refueling equipment.

With prices starting from £3.1 million or about $4.3 million at today’s exchange rates before taxes, the new GMA T.50s ‘Niki Lauda’ is going to be one of the most exclusive track weapons available on the planet.
